Artificial grass substructure
Laying your own artificial grass has never been easier. This manual, prepared by Namgrass artificial grass, shows you how our installers work to lay your artificial grass lawn.
To install artificial grass, you need a flat, stable and water-permeable surface..
Artificial turf gardens
The best solution as a substrate for artificial grass is stabilisé, but it is not always necessary.
The big advantage of a stabilised surface is that weeds and moles have little or no chance.
If you do not have soft soil, subsidence, moles, etc. in your garden, the artificial grass can be laid on top of the soil. To do this, first remove the top layer, level and level to 1.5 to 2 cm below the desired level with crushing sand and vibrate the surface evenly. In this way, the area is well suited for the installation of artificial grass in the garden.
Afterwards, the artificial grass can be fixed in the soft substrate with, for example, fastening hooks or screws, at each corner and every metre along the sides.
If you wish to keep the existing paving, you should ensure that there are no potholes, cracks or other unevennesses.
Artificial grass terrace
To provide artificial grass on a balcony or roof terrace, it is important that there is always good water drainage. Here, we are also going to provide a white geotextile with drainage tops that acts as a drainage mat and a buffer to avoid too high temperatures from the sun.

Artificial grass geotextiles
A geotextile is provided under the artificial grass in certain circumstances*, it has a pressure-distributing, weed-repelling and noise-damping effect when working on a stabiliser. Roll out the geotextile, cut to size and attach with nails to the azobé posts. Little tip: spray the geotextile with water, so it adheres to the surface and will not move once you pull/roll the grass over it.
*With pets, for example, geotextile will not be placed, as the underlay will trap the smell of urine.
After the geotextile has been cut and placed, you can start rolling out the artificial grass rolls. Choose one fibre direction and respect it for the rest of the project.
The fibre direction is best laid in the direction from which one looks at the garden the most. The best effect is obtained if one looks into the artificial grass fibres (fibres point towards you), avoid having to look on the back side of the fibres.
Cutting artificial grass
Cutting to size and edging the artificial grass carpet is best done with a sturdy, sharp knife (e.g. Stanley knife).
First and foremost, cut the edge of the parent fabric. You can base yourself on the penultimate tuft line.
Moreover, it is best to cut diagonally, along the back, between the loops of the grass fibres. That way you won't damage any fibres.
When cutting to size, allow a margin of 5cm each time. You can then remove this margin at the end of the artificial grass installation.
Put the seams together at 1 mm: if too far you will see the ground, if too close, grass will no longer lie on the ground... now do this with all seams.
Artificial grass gluing
An adhesive band is laid under the seams.
Once all the cutting work is done and the artificial grass is in the desired position, the two-component adhesive can be mixed using a hand blender. It is best to pour the glue over in smaller portions to facilitate distribution on the glue band.
Distribution of the glue is done with a glue comb; the use of plastic gloves is also recommended.
Excess glue will deposit between the fibres via the seams and perforations, so any glue residue must be removed immediately.
Please note that this glue hardens quickly and is impossible to use in rainy weather!
The seams are then sealed and firmly pressed. When sealing, it is convenient to work in pairs and seal the artificial grass like a zip.
After sealing the seams, walk the entire length of the seam at least 3 times.
Do this in small steps to stamp the entire seam.
Let the glue dry for at least 2 to 3 hours at temperatures > 10°C.
If you follow this guide step by step, you should be able to lay your own artificial grass in your garden or patio.
Artificial grass maintenance and use
Your garden, roof terrace, golf green,... looks perfect just after installation and you want to keep it that way. In this manual you will find the most important guidelines for the use and minimalist maintenance of artificial grass.Maintaining artificial grass
It is important to keep artificial grass clean:
- A few loose leaves will give a very natural effect to your lawn. Although avoid piles of leaves that start to compost in the artificial grass. Useful tools to remove these are a leaf blower/vacuum cleaner, a hard broom, plastic squeegee, hoover,...
- Remove pet accidents and rinse for your own hygiene.
- Recent stains are easiest to remove, so quick action is the key. Remove stains from beer, coffee, blood and ice cream with water.
- On stubborn stains, use a solution of 3% ammonia in water.
- Sporadically brush unfilled artificial grass with a hard broom (especially in the case of high-pile fibres). The best effect is obtained in dry weather. If necessary, the infill material can be replenished (ideally every two years).
- If weeds grow on the pitch, especially along the edges of the artificial grass mat, it is best to remove them by hand. Make sure to pull out the roots as well. In sunny and dry weather, the weeds can also be removed with a biodegradable herbicide (weed killer).
- If there are loose seams, they should be repaired as soon as possible. Contact your artificial grass supplier immediately.
- If water remains on the pitch for any reason, you should seek expert advice from your artificial grass supplier.
- If the artificial grass is used for sporting purposes, annual mechanical re-sprinkled.
Artificial turf use
- Cigarettes, fire or hot objects can cause melting and scorching.
- Only enter the artificial grass with clean shoes, free of mud or other dirt.
- Sports shoes with steel studs (spikes) are not recommended.
- Chewing gum and glass are best avoided: chewing gum is best removed with ice, but can also be removed with water or ice spray. When using ice spray, make sure that the freon content is not too high, so as not to damage the artificial grass fibres.
- Snow and ice do not damage artificial turf, but frost and black ice harden the artificial turf: so wait (until it starts to thaw) before clearing snow and other items.
It is possible to have some of this maintenance work done by us. We can have sand replenished and, if you wish, brush up your lawn with a professional brush machine.
